May 2011Youngsters do club proud
Horncastle Tennis teams started the summer season at the weekend with three matches. On Saturday, the U8 team travelled to Tealby to play their first Aegon Team tennis match. The boys were sporting their new club polos and hoodies and did the club proud, winning 14 matches and only losing two. At this stage of mini-tennis, each match consists of a tie break to ten points and is played with low compression balls. The boys played some great rallies despite the windy conditions and conducted themselves well on court, demonstrating their ever increasing knowledge of the game and good sportsmanship. Ross Armstrong and Callum Dean were undefeated all day while George Coleman and Lewis Dean lost just one game each and only by two points each. The ladies second team played Spalding at home on Saturday afternoon. The very windy conditions made life difficult for both teams. Representing Horncastle were captain Karen Stott and Jane Reeds, Jeannette Sreedharan and Yvonne Thomas and Di Jones and Sue Gillett. All pairs managed a win each, but lost the other two rubbers so the final result was 6-3 to Spalding. The ladies 1st team travelled to Gainsborough on Sunday and again the wind made life difficult, but Horncastle notched up a good first win. Playing on the superb grass at Gainsborough was a real treat, with at least two Horncastle members choosing to take a dive that they wouldn’t have done on the hard courts. Faye Button and Jane Clark and Shirley Sutton and Jessica Nugent won all of their matches and Julie Hillsmith and Sally Speed won one, so the final result was 7-2 to Horncastle.
